Find out more about kitesurfing and why everyone is talking about it – and doing it!

What is Kitesurfing?

The words kite and surfing both bring a smile to your face. After all, flying a kite and surfing the waves are incredibly fun. Just imagine the excitement when the two come together! Kitesurfing is a type of kiteboarding. What does that mean? Well, kiteboarding is a watersport that combines the elements of windsurfing, snowboarding, paragliding, wakeboarding, skateboarding, and gymnastics. In kiteboarding, the board the looks like a wakeboard with bindings that attach you to it. Take it up a notch with kitesurfing. There are no bindings, and you use a standard surfboard. Merely focus is on riding the waves and harnessing the power of the air with a kite. Cabarete is the perfect locale, with sea breezes and calm waters.

When Did Kitesurfing Start?

Somebody had to be the first to discover kitesurfing. The idea was the brainchild of more than one water enthusiast. Gijsbertus Adrianus is known as the father of kitesurfing. In 1977, he put together a surf bard and a parachute device to combine the power of wind and water for the ultimate experience. But in 1903, Samuel Cody managed to create a kite that could lift his weight an get him across the English Channel in a lightweight boat. Other innovators throughout the 1970s and 80s transformed the face of kitesurfing into the watersport we love today. Now kitesurfing is an official event for the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.

It Only Looks Complicated

Watching kitesurfing is like seeing ballet on the water. All of that style and grace can be off-putting. But it only looks complicated! You don’t have to be a great athlete or incredibly strong to try kitesurfing. In fact, it is often considered one of the easiest water sports to learn. All it takes is a sense of adventure, a bit of courage and a couple of lessons to get started. Many people go for a three-day class, and then they’re off and kitesurfing!

Feel Good and Have Fun

Kitesurfing is one of the most refreshing ways to feel good and have fun during a vacation in the Dominican Republic. You use your entire body when you kitesurf. Your legs control the board while your arms and abs are used to hold the kite and stay balanced. When you get into the water, you use a harness. So you can ride for a long time without getting tired! Once you experience the rush, you’ll want to keep doing it.

Look Who Else is Kitesurfing

You don’t have to be a young athlete to try kitesurfing. President Barack Obama had a kitesurfing adventure with Sir Richard Branson – and neither of them is kids. And who else has been spotted kitesurfing? Prince William, John Kerry, Brad Pitt, Ricky Martin, Cameron Diaz, Adam Sandler, and Jennifer Aniston – to name a few. When you start kitesurfing, you’re in plenty of esteemed company. Riding the water and air is sure to be the most incredible time in the Dominican Republic.

The Ultimate Freedom

Are you stuck in a cubicle or office day after day, week after week? Break the cycle during your escape to the tropics. Kitesurfing gives you a sense of the ultimate freedom. All it takes is a surfboard, kite, air, and water to ride. Banish your fear of flying forever. Dare to let go of the restraints and responsibilities of daily life. Grab your gear and head for the water where you can shed all your inhibitions!

Captivating Cabarete

Once upon a time, Cabarete was a sleepy fishing and farming hamlet. Today it is one of the most alluring resorts spots on the globe. Located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, beautiful Cabarete Bay is protected by a coral reef. Kite Beach, as the name implies, is in the zone for windsurfing. Breezy conditions and inviting waters make this area the hottest spot for kitesurfing and other watersports. Soak up the unlimited sun and fun on these golden beaches.
